TreeIn the beginning, there was only the sky, the ground and the ocean. On land, there was a chief named Halloka. Every day, the chief and five animals (a deer, a horse, a giraffe, a whale and a bird) gathered and talked to each other. One evening, when the animals gathered around the chief as usual, the bird started to complain to the chief. The chief asked the bird why he was so angry and the bird replied that it was because he had no place to sleep. The bird eagerly answered, "To be honest, I have been flying in the sky for days because I didn't have anywhere to sleep. My legs are too stiff to be bent, and my beak is too big to be laid down on the ground. All other animals can sleep on the ground but I can't!" The chief pondered for a while and told the bird, " I understand your troublesome. I came up with a solution, but it requires your effort to make it work." The chief gave soil and plants from the ground to the bird and said, "I will give you these two materials, but using them wisely is up to you."

After that evening, the bird spent a few days thinking about how to build a place to sleep. 'What should I do?' he thought. The bird couldn't come up with a solution. Just then, other animals started to come up to him and offered to help. "How about building a pole with soil? I can help you to carry the soil," the horse said. The bird was amazed by the horse's idea. The deer and the horse said that they would help to build a pole, and the whale said that he could help to bring the water to mix with the soil. For few days, the bird and the other animals worked on building a soil pole. After the pole was done, the deer said, "But what should we do with the top of the pole?" The mockingbird replied proudly, "I have a plan. Giraffe, can you help me?" Suddenly, the mockingbird flew up to the sky and started to pile the plants up on the pole. The giraffe started to help too. After a while, the pole was finished. The top of the pole was covered green plants and the branches of the pole made a place for the mocking bird to sit on. "Wow, I can't believe we made this. Thank you so much, guys!" the bird said. The animals had all worked together to build a place for the bird to sleep. They decided to call the soil-pole a "tree" and made more trees from then on.
